They are well education and have a strong heart as their backbone
It is a great place. They always host events about transgenders.
Also, I was in several of the email chat groups, which are moderated, but the moderator is drunk with power, so she censors everything so no one has a real voice unless they agree absolutely with her. If she doesn't like the terms you use, or the way you word something, or your opinion, or the sources you site, she won't allow your email through. She told me I could debate with her about a statistic I'd found, but I couldn't get the opinions of other members (which, of course, negates the purpose of a discussion group). She didn't let the groups see anything she didn't like, but she allowed some very incendiary comments through from her friends. Censorship is not a policy of the UU. This was a personality problem with the individual moderating the mail groups (Annmarie or something like that).
Overall, what I found were a lot of good, well-meaning people, and a lot of hypocrites. Although many members were terrific, others seemed to want to be seen as giving, tolerant, etc., when in fact, they were anything but. That problem was most evident in the people in positions of authority like Pastor what's-her-name (now gone, and I don't know the current one), and the moderator of the mailing groups (still the same as far as I know).
I left the church because these few people made me feel unwelcome and un-acknowledged, and the kindness of the rest of the congregation wasn't enough to counterbalance the others. Sadly, it takes just a few bad apples to spoil the whole batch. The UU of Eugene needs to be more careful about who they allow to wield power.
This church excepts and loves you for who you are; whether your atheist, transgender, gay, straight, homeless, Christian or other. They also have gender respectful bathrooms. You can come here pray, sing songs and enjoy social interactions without discrimination, stigma or someone telling you you will burn in hell just because you we born a certainty way.
Many in the congregation are very nice, but when I was there and I needed help, the pastor wouldn't give me the time of day. I have a severe anxiety condition, so could only email or leave phone messages, and she wouldn't even respond. A friend contacted her for me, and she told that friend that she was too busy, and that even though I'd been going there for over a year, because I hadn't actually joined, she couldn't help. Idiotic! And not the policy of the UU.
Also another great church in Eugene
This congregation is welcoming of all people. They don't ask that you believe in any particular thing. It is a lovely group of people seeking truth together. Great music, a fantastic religious education program for kids (and grown ups), and a variety of activities and programs throughout the week make this a fabulous place for anyone looking for a warm, inclusive community.
