Recommendation for this place from a professor of mine. Very liberal / progressive establishment with a locally well known history supporting non-dominant culture. The preparation of the salmon I had left me jealous that I don't know how to cook to this level of excellence. The beet salad was done right, a lot of arugula with beets. Anywhere else I've ordered this it has been mostly beets with garnishment level amounts of arugula. The service was delightful. They hit the magic balance of attentiveness and not being intrusive; avoided the behaviors I detest in a place like forcing me to engage in small talk like "what are you up to today?" / "what are your plans?". Instead their words and kindness were focused on how they could best serve / facilitate my best possible dining experience. There aren't many words either, but they were all skillful. All the employees that approached me beamed / radiated such a palpable, what seemed to be, genuine warmth as if they thought it was adorable that I was there. There were no Televisions visible from the dining area (2 small ones at the bar) -- I don't like Televisions where I dine, particularly if the food and or company is something I find to be special. The price was also surprisingly reasonable, given that the quality of the food, the service, and the ambiance seemed deserving of far more. I have to give it to my professor, she hit it out of the park with this recommendation.
Finally, the main course: Mac n cheese. It's hard to go wrong, and they didn't. It was good, very creamy and had nicely steamed broccoli in it that retained a little bite. I didn't notice any bacon, though I think it was supposed to be there if I remember correctly from the menu. Overall, this dish had nicely contrasting textures with the creamy cheese, crisp-tender broccoli and crisp bread crumbs, but lacked depth of flavor.
Great food, creative menu, wonderful customer service.
We ordered the taquitos and cheese platter for starters, and the Mac n cheese for mains to share for two people. The taquito filling was bland but they were crispy, not greasy, and had delicious toppings. It was enough food for a main course, honestly. The cheese platter paired a delicious soft cheese with spiced apples, which was divine. The shaved goats cheese was ok but not very flavorful. The fondue was good but, again, not super flavorful. There was an excess of preserves. There was just barely enough bread, but it was a sweet levain bread that was delicious in its own right. All in all, it was good but I wouldn't get either again.
Very good service, large portions, decent prices, and overall good food that lacked flavor but nailed textures and mouth-feel.
Menu choices and quality of food just keep getting better all the time. A lovely atmosphere, wide open, a lot of window space/seating, and not too noisy when the restaurant is filled. Best downtown restaurant choice for an upscale dinner without overspending.
Wouldn't let me in because I had a backpack on, even when I said I wanted to coat check it. If you don't want my money that's fine, the business makes enough I guess. I will dance at another bar. I will rate this again if I get a reasonable answer for their actions.
